Ahhhhh, yes. The holiday season. I'm basking in all the free time I now have from school. Hopefully I can get back into the groove of things again. My blog has been neglected for far too long. This is a start, though—and a yummy one at that! These roasted potatoes are usually considered as a side, but I love snacking on them by themselves. They are so flavorful! I actually baked them twice today. I couldn't get enough.

If you need any last-minute ideas for a dish to bring to holiday parties, these are definitely a good choice. They're not at all difficult to make, and they're a nice reprieve from all those sweets!

I'm not usually one for reading thrillers. I'd read about a handful that had been way too predictable for me and had left me feeling nothing but disappointment, so I've tried avoiding that genre altogether. However, as soon as I saw the first trailer for the Gone Girl movie, I became intrigued. And the more that people who've actually read the book had ended up loving it, the more I became intrigued. I'm so glad that my friend (a book blogger whose blog you can check out HERE) managed to convince me, because this book BLEW. MY. MIND.

I have so much I want to say about Gone Girl, but it's going to be difficult remaining spoiler-free, so I'll have to cut this one short. But I'll do it anyway for those who haven't read the book. Because I want you to read this book! And while at it, stay away from everything that has anything to do with the movie until you're done. Or at least try.

I don't know how Gillian Flynn did it, but the character development she's created for Amy Dunne is superb. She is one hell of a character. Her character alone deserves an award. Being able to immerse yourself in her psyche is really something that should be taken advantage of because although I enjoyed the movie version immensely, you don't get to see/hear much of her view on things.

This was the first thriller that really left me feeling compelled to finish all the way to the end. I was thoroughly impressed with the plot. It was incredibly well thought out. A definite page-turner that'll keep you hooked.

Another thing that surprised me was the humor out of all the morbidity. Both of the main characters say some pretty disturbing things that I probably shouldn't have laughed at, but I couldn't help it. Ultimate definition of dark humor. And Gillian Flynn knows dark well, which I've come to learn after checking out her other books.

Please, please, please try this book out if you still haven't done so. You won't regret it.

A couple months ago, I started to notice signs of trouble with my blood sugar levels. I love sweets, I really do. I've loved sweets ever since I could remember. And, unfortunately, I'm paying for it. Ever since my body had been acting up, I've been trying to cut down on my sugar intake. I've also been hunting for types of foods that would help lower my blood sugar levels. This is where loquat leaves come in.

Loquat leaves are evergreen leaves that can grow up to 12 inches long and 4 inches wide. They are used as a natural healing agent for many things, but fighting diabetes is what they're most known for. I'm not a big fan of tea, but because of the results I've gotten from drinking loquat leaves tea, you won't get a single complaint from me.

As you can see from above, the ones growing in my backyard tend to come with fuzzy little particles—sometimes even spiders and webs, so I often scrub and rinse each leaf down till I can see their natural glossy finish.

Some like to tear the leaves to pieces, but I like to leave them intact. Less work, same results. Also, the older the leaves, the better. I place about 2-3 large leaves in a kettle with some water—4 if they're medium sized—and let it boil until I hear it whistle. I let it steep for a few hours so that the water really soaks up all the nutrients and benefits the loquat leaves provide. After that, it's ready to drink.

I prefer to drink it cold, but if you like your tea hot, just pour yourself a cup and reheat it. As you can see, the resulting color is a dark, rich orange tint.

Room is a profoundly moving novel told from the perspective of a five-year-old boy named Jack who has lived his whole life in one single room. The room is about 12-by-12 feet, but for Jack and his mother it's their entire world. He has no idea he is being held captive and he's completely unaware of the fact that there is life beyond these four walls. To him, it's home. To his mother, it's a prison.

As we get deeper into the book, we learn that his mother had been abducted about 7 years prior to the start of the novel and had been imprisoned in this backyard shed ever since. She's used as a sex slave by her captor for all 7 years, with Jack as the result. Despite being in such an abhorrent situation, his mother had managed to preserve his innocence and raise Jack in a nurturing and loving environment.

Being that it was written from a five-year-old's perspective, the writing will be different from your normal book. His vocabulary was definitely something I had to get used to, but it doesn't last the whole book. Don't let it hinder you from really immersing yourself into the darkness. His perspective was incredibly powerful. We know what's going on throughout this whole situation, but he does not. He's completely oblivious to his and his mother's imprisonment.

There are times when you get so wrapped up in their mundane everyday life that when his age and innocence peak out every now and then through something as simple as asking about the reality of what he sees on TV, you're quickly pulled back to Earth and you realize that this kid has never in his life stepped outside of this one room. His innocence isn't cute, it's heartbreaking. It was also poignant to see his mother try and smile and appease him during these times. I can only image the courage and strong will it took to have so much love and patience to give considering so much had been taken from her.

I've made a commitment to only mention specific companies, organizations and/or products on this blog that I stand by 100%. Lush is one of those companies, and Charity Pot is definitely one of those products. If you're not familiar with Lush: Basically, they're a company that sells fresh handmade cosmetics (as their slogan says). But Lush is so much more than that. There's a lot that goes into their products that even the people who frequently shop there aren't fully aware of.

The packaging itself is reason enough for me to shop at Lush. There aren't many altruistic companies out there that make it a priority to go green. Using reusable, recyclable and/or biodegradable packaging is one of Lush's policies, which is something I definitely appreciate. Another thing worth recognizing is their benevolent use of fair trade ingredients, and on top of that they've started the SLush Fund that has helped start sustainable farming and community projects which have produced some of the ingredients for the Charity Pot.

When you buy a pot of this, 100% of the proceeds (minus tax) go to to small, grassroots organizations working in the areas of environmental conservation, animal welfare and human rights.

Since launching their Charity Pot program in 2007, they've donated more than $5,800,000 to over 600 grassroots charities in 35 countries.
Now, for my take on the lotion itself:

This stuff smells amazing. They recently changed up the formula and I have seen some mixed reviews, but I personally love the way it is now. It has a warm, rich, creamy vanilla scent. I find myself sniffing my skin throughout the day, and the scent does last all day. The only thing I'm not too fond of is the residue it leaves on my hands after applying it all over my body. Otherwise, I don't mind the heavy consistency 'cause it leaves my skin feeling extremely moisturized. This stuff is self-preserving—meaning free of any artificial preservatives—and a little goes a long way, so even a small pot of this will last me quite a while!

Overall, Charity Pot is definitely something that I'll continue to purchase and use for as long as I can. Help save the world, one lotion at a time!

I found this book sitting on my to-read shelf on Goodreads a couple weeks ago. It had been sitting there for so long that I don't even remember why I initially wanted to read it, but I'm glad I did. In fact, I loved it so much I ended up buying myself a copy.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer is basically about a 9-year-old boy who has to deal with the death of his father on 9/11. He's a very curious child who has a very active imagination—which can be a blessing and a curse. A blessing because his mind has no limits on where it could take him. He's an intelligent boy and quite well informed about the world around him. It could easily be seen with how he takes situations and people in for what it is and what they are—without judgement. Just mere observation.

However, it's also a curse because... his mind has no limits on where it could take him. And sometimes it takes him to very morbid places. Like what his father was doing during the last few minutes of his life. Did he jump to his death? Did he burn alive? Was he thinking about me? Did he need me? He's got a lot of thoughts and he's got a lot of feelings. Every time they become overwhelmingly unbearable, his mind finds ways to distract itself. One of which leads him to start fixating on a key that he found in a random vase in his dad's closet. He begins a search to find out where it's from and what it unlocks, and as we go along on his journey we learn some things that we never would have expected. And some things that remain unanswered.

During the summer, my skin almost always ends up sweaty and grimy and not at all comfortable by the end of the day. Especially after a workout. I've thought about using toners/astringents, but the last time I used those the alcohol in them completely dried out my skin. And my skin is quite oily.

Thank Mother Earth for aloe vera!

Aloe vera is well known for healing minor wounds and soothing sunburns. I mean, there are tons of uses for this stuff. I had a few growing around the garden that needed pruning, so I did some research and experimenting and I found my very own use for it. It's pure, inexpensive, easy to care for, and best of all: a great, organic head-to-toe skin toner.

Rubbing this directly onto my skin at the end of the day not only helps cool me off, but the anti-microbial properties of it clean my pores as well. I don't have to reach for a facial cleanser or anything additional. This also helps moisturize my skin without leaving a greasy residue. Always a plus for oily skin!
The past few years have been very crucial to the makings of who I am. All the decisions I've made — good and bad — have had a huge impact on my life. And I've learned quite a lot from them. But I've barely even experienced and explored a portion of what I would like to of this world. I have yet to scratch the surface. There is much more growth and change to come. This blog is for sharing my discoveries and maybe even inspiring you to do some discovering of your own.
